Nova Scotia. Built to build.

Nova Scotia’s response to the
Government of Canada’s National
Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy.

History

Shipbuilding in Halifax has a long and important legacy. Halifax has always been known as a centre for shipbuilding excellence, even as far back as the 1800s.

Halifax Shipyard itself has gone through many ups and downs in its history, but has always demonstrated that Nova Scotia was built to build. It’s in our blood.

Take a look at the Halifax Shipyard section to learn more about the shipyard’s history. Did you know that the shipyard was destroyed in 1917 in the Halifax Explosion?

The History of Shipbuilding section will tell you about Nova Scotia’s place in the last few centuries of shipbuilding. Did you know that between 1840 and 1880, ships built in Nova Scotia helped make Canada’s merchant fleet the fourth largest in the world?
